ViewBio
Peter Baines OAM is a leadership keynote speaker, author and founder of Hands Across the Water, known for helping leaders and teams understand what it takes to lead when pressure is high, information is incomplete and others are relying on them.
A former police forensic leader from Australia, Peter has worked in some of the world’s most confronting crisis and disaster environments, including the Bali Bombings and the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. These experiences shaped his understanding of leadership, resilience, decision-making and the human responsibility leaders carry in moments that matter.
Following the tsunami, Peter founded Hands Across the Water, a charity supporting children and communities in Thailand. What began as a response to tragedy has become a long-term example of purpose-led leadership, sustained commitment and meaningful impact.
Peter’s keynotes are powerful, human and practical. He draws on lived experience from crisis response, humanitarian leadership, endurance and building a global movement to challenge audiences to think differently about trust, accountability, resilience and purpose. His presentations resonate with executives, corporate teams, associations and organisations navigating change, uncertainty, fatigue or transformation.
In 2024, Peter completed a 1,400-kilometre run across Thailand in 26 days to mark 20 years since the Boxing Day Tsunami and honour the communities connected to Hands Across the Water. The journey reinforced one of his core messages: resilience is not a moment. It is built over time, through discipline, connection and shared purpose.
Peter is the author of four books and has been recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia. He speaks to audiences across Australia and internationally, delivering keynotes that leave people with greater clarity, perspective and responsibility for how they lead when it matters most.
